My personal thoughts on this book: The Silver Star is about a young girl who isn't afraid to challenge the status-quo. As the book begins, we are keenly aware that things aren't quite right as Bean and Liz are often left home alone for days or weeks at a time while their mother explores her hippy passions and tries to break into the music business in 1970s California. Soon, the girls travel cross country to stay with their uncle where they begin to learn about family history from his perspective and are faced with adversity and new obstacles. Bean is only 12, but she isn't afraid to take control and to go against the flow in order to do what is right. Written from the perspective of a 12 year old girl, it is a "quick read," perfect for the busy woman on the go (or a homeschooling mom, as the case may be). The story is captivating, and you can't help buy love this young girl for her spunk and initiative even though she is rather misguided at times.

All of that said, this novel does not hold the same spark that Walls' previous novels held. It has similar themes, and, having read memoir, The Glass Castle, it is obvious where some of the themes of abuse and neglect came from, but there could be so much more. The ending is abrupt, and I was left feeling like I needed a little bit more. I would still recommend the book, but I wish there had been just a little more creative punch and a stronger conclusion to a good story.

ReplyDeleteSounds like an interesting read. Keep having fun in your homeschooling! I've been at it with our five all their lives - my oldest is 23 now, has his BS and just returned from a D.C. internship (poly sci major), my youngest is 11. Keeps life interesting doesn't it :-)
ReplyDeleteI so agree with you about this book not having the same spark as Walls' other books. Maybe because I felt soooo sad for the girls.
